I’m seeing a discussion about bodies in video games, and I’m having way too much rage boil through my veins because of the fact that, for women especially, I have rarely seen a woman who was fat and badass in a fucking video game.

It. Does. Not. Happen.

Are you kidding me…. I haven’t even seen a girl “average” sized or less than a D cup in most games much less a larger build LOL. Or without an almost impossible hour glass figure (almost- always some exceptions).

Oh. And let’s not forget the unrealistically drawn breasts. Everyone loves balloon boobs

As someone that needs to drop 20-30 pounds before I come close to liking the shape I’m in (my father was a genetic mess…morbidly obese, bad tempered, hairy, the works), I have to weigh in on this and respectfully disagree with the general attitudes presented, and I hope I don’t come across as judgmental, elitist, or vitriolic.

While I see some of the points you make, I think a distinction needs to be drawn between bullying people because they have some disadvantage (either some disorder or even just bad genetics), which is clearly wrong, and the attitude of “everyone is special”, which one David McCullough so wonderfully tears down. (Google up ‘you are not special’)

I take no issue with the idealized body types in comics.  I myself would like to have the physique to cosplay Wolverine, so every time I look in the mirror, I say “yep, I have a paunch.  I need to lose this paunch.”  It sometimes keeps me awake at night.  But that’s because I know that there are some people that have achieved that physique and that it’s possible for me to achieve it as well, so I need to work harder, despite my crap genetics.  I see nothing wrong with that.  I also see nothing wrong with Scarlett Johansson making women feel insecure, or video game/comic females promoting a certain type of image.

Now have video games and comics idealized and sexualized women in the past?  Yes (see: Escher Girls tumblr).  Do some of them still do?  You bet.  Are they getting better?  As women become more and more of an audience, mmhmm.  But are their body types absurd?

Not at all.  In fact, for some of the most designed-to-be-sexy characters, I’ve seen ladies that look even better than the comic book/cartoon versions.  These include:

Poison Ivy (batman), Black Widow (avengers, comic version), Miranda (Mass effect 3), Mary Jane (spider man), Black Cat/Felicia Hardy (spider man), Emma Frost (X-men), Psylocke (both black and purple outfits, Xmen), Miss Marvel (marvel comics, avengers I believe), and Catwoman (the dark knight rises).  It’s far from exhaustive.

So yeah.  Don’t like your body image?  Hit the gym.  Don’t feel intelligent enough?  Take some free online courses (Udacity, EdX, Coursera, etc.)

But please, PLEASE, don’t sit and say how certain people are ‘privileged’.  Yes, they might have had a head start by virtue of genetics, but beyond that, everyone’s fate is in their own hands.  Or so I’d like to believe.

Since you want to demand people go to google and educate themselves, go fucking google how fat people are DISCRIMINATED against in jobs with regards to pay and the like. Go look up “This is thin privilege” and read the number of stories where fat people are harangued, disregarded, disrespected, and made out to be disgusting sub human creatures instead of receiving the goddamn basic human decency they deserve.

I want everybody to understand what happened here. They refused to take in a trans woman, and she died as a result. They killed a trans woman. Killed. Because they “disagreed with her lifestyle”.

You wanna know why I can’t just be all “oh well, it’s their opinion, they’re entitled to it” when it comes to bigotry? This. This is fucking why.
