On January 18th many websites including Tumblr are going black for one of the largest Internet protest in Internet history. Thousands of sites taking part in the protest and will be directing people to contact Congress to kill SOPA and PIPA.
On Januray 24th the Senate is going to vote on PIPA which is the Senates version of SOPA. And here is a little clip from an email I got today.

In just 7 days, the Senate will vote on forever altering the free and open internet by instituting a new regime of extra-judicial, corporate-led website takedowns. This is a fundamental fight about who has power in society — the people with the means to communicate freely or the governments and corporations that feel threatened.

Pretty much, if these bills are passed it could not only effect the U.S., but other countries around the world.
