Call for Participants: Autism and Roleplaying Study

girljanitor:

I am part of an independent research study on autism, Asperger’s, and roleplaying that began in July 2011 with an exploratory survey. The exploratory survey, which received about n=200 responses, was intended to help us determine where we should be focusing our examination. The exploratory survey asked participants questions about some of their habits and behaviors related to roleplaying with an extremely heavy bias toward text-based roleplaying. Based on the responses and feedback for the first exploratory survey, we have been developing a second, more focused survey, which is intended to further explore the habits, attitudes, experiences, and behavior of Autistic roleplayers compared to the habits, attitudes, experiences, and behavior of non-Autistic roleplayers.

We are particularly curious about potential answers to the following investigation questions:

  1. How might Autistic and non-Autistic roleplayers differ in their primary motivations to roleplay, if at all?
  2. How might Autistic and non-Autistic roleplayers differ in how frequently they roleplay, if at all?
  3. How might Autistic and non-Autistic roleplayers differ in their preferred types, styles, or mediums of roleplaying, if at all?
  4. How might Autistic and non-Autistic roleplayers differ in their negative experiences with or as a result of roleplaying, if at all?
  5. How might Autistic and non-Autistic roleplayers differ in their positive experiences with or as a result of roleplaying, if at all?
  6. How might Autistic and non-Autistic roleplayers differ in their engagement with both roleplaying-related and non-roleplaying-related social opportunities facilitated through roleplaying?
  7. Are there any correlations between roleplaying and negative past experiences, and or are there different rates of correlation between roleplaying and negative past experiences for Autistic and non-Autistic roleplayers?
  8. Are there any common demographic denominators disproportionately represented among the sample of roleplayers who participate, including the prevalence of self-identified disability?
  9. How might Autistic and non-Autistic differ in their roleplaying-related behaviors and habits, if at all?

In order to be eligible to participate in this study, which consists of completing a survey in the form of an online questionnaire, you must have roleplayed in at least one of the following forms at least once within the last twelve months:

  • Text-based roleplaying forum, message boards, or chat server
  • Massively Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Game (MMORPG) or MUD (Multi-User Dungeon)
  • Virtual reality or simulated reality, such as Second Life
  • Pen and paper or tabletop roleplaying game, such as Dungeons and Dragons
  • Text-based roleplay or collaborative writing over email or real-time text editor, such as etherpad or Google docs
  • Roleplay over social media, such as Facebook or Tumblr
  • Live Action Roleplaying (LARP) or cosplay
  • Informal, improvised “pretend” or imaginary games
  • Roleplaying video games

If you have any questions or concerns about the survey, please don’t hesitate to contact us at autismandroleplaying@gmail.com.

Here is the survey.

I totally took it. I RP at least once a week, and I also encourage autistic teens and college-age autistic folks to do so. It’s great for developing cooperative problem-solving skills; I still need work i that department.

Chicago Prepares For Evacuation In The Event Of Riots During NATO Summit
As concerns about security grow in the run-up to the NATO summit, it’s becoming difficult to separate myth from reality. Are there plans in place for a mass evacuation of downtown in the event of riots on May 20-21? A Red Cross memo out of Milwaukee indicates that there is.
Officials there have been asked to make plans to assist residents in the event of a mass exodus. Chicago officials say the plan didn’t come from them. The U.S. Secret Service isn’t talking.
There also are reports that a heavily armed security team will start making a very public appearance around federal buildings in the Loop this week. Officials with the Chicago NATO host committee were completely in the dark. They had no reports of any such plans.
A source told CBS 2 that security forces in full battle gear would not be seen this week. As for the Red Cross plan, CBS 2 News has obtained a copy of an e-mail sent to volunteers in the Milwaukee area.
It said the NATO summit “may create unrest or another national security incident. The American Red Cross in southeastern Wisconsin has been asked to place a number of shelters on standby in the event of evacuation of Chicago.”
According to a chapter spokesperson, the evacuation plan is not theirs alone. “Our direction has come from the City of Chicago and the Secret Service,” she said.

What if They Declared an Emergency and No One Came?

babyslime:

It’s been three weeks since Attawapiskat First Nation took the extraordinary step of declaring a state of emergency. Since then, not a single federal or provincial official has even bothered to visit the community.

No aid agencies have stepped forward. No disaster management teams have offered help.

Meanwhile temperatures have dropped 20 degrees and will likely drop another 20 or 25 degrees further in the coming weeks. For families living in uninsulated tents, makeshift cabins and sheds, the worsening weather poses serious risk.

Two weeks ago I travelled to this community on the James Bay coast to see why conditions had become so extreme that local leaders felt compelled to declare a state of emergency. It was like stepping into a fourth world. […]

This is Canada, people. CANADA. The blatant racism in these actions is astounding. The way our government treats the first nation peoples is disgusting.
